Mundfish is unambiguously calling The Cube an ‘MMORPG shooter’ with dungeons and proper

it is, in fact, about your cube

Back during Summer Game Fest, Mundfish announced a new “MMORPG shooter” called The Cube, and now we’re getting some more info courtesy of a new interview on Wccftech. As we noted at the time, while Geoff Keighley called the Atomic Heart-themed game an “MMORPG shooter” on stage, the subsequent PR toned that down to “multiplayer RPG shooter,”

But in this brand-new interview, games director Robert Bagratuni is very clear and unambiguous in calling it an MMORPG shooter once again. Now, if you’re wondering what part of an MMORPG will be in the game, that remains to be seen; Bagratuni makes it clear that the game will have persistent character progression, and he also notes that pure combat is not the only way you take on challenges in an MMORPG, but he doesn’t actually describe anything about the game other than combat.

“We’re calling it an MMORPG shooter because it blends that strong narrative foundation with large-scale systems: deep and persistent character progression, customizable loadouts, long-term gear upgrades, quests, and evolving objectives, like expeditions, shaped by the community,” he says. “But unlike traditional MMOs, The CUBE is not about static quest hubs or routine grinds – it’s about exploration, discovery, and adapting to a shifting, surreal environment that changes over time.”

Still, seeing the label applied alone should garner some attention, along with his repeated statements that the game will feature dungeon-like experiences, ongoing updates, and a variety of different content with a continuing evolution to what players encounter. Questions about things like crafting remain to be asked, much less answered, and Bagratuni outright states that the team is still discussing the business model and can’t conclude anything about it just yet. But it’s still a sign of where the team is aiming.
