It’s weird to me how often the person who wants to make an MMORPG winds up being the worst person to actually manage that MMORPG. Turnover is real, and sometimes you wind up with a new person as the game director or producer or design lead and suddenly the game is in a new golden age. It’s not universal, but I can think of at least four games off the top of my head that have benefited immensely from management changes in both player perception and general feel of updates.
Now, it’s always hard to be sure how much of these things are entirely real or a matter of perception; for example, Melissa Bianco’s tenure with City of Heroes often gets a lot of love compared to even Matt Miller’s design leadership, but Miller was still a part of the team afterwards! But that’s what makes the question fun to ask. So what MMORPG do you think has benefited the most from a change in management? What stands out as a moment when someone new took charge and the game felt like it suddenly was moisturized and thriving in its lane?
