Apparently the rapid pace of content additions to World of Warcraft isn’t enough to keep some of the MMORPG’s bigger streamers invested, as there’s been a noted wave of those players instead taking a peek into Old School RuneScape.
As first chronicled by GamesRadar, notable WoW streamers have recently started dipping into OSRS for the first time, primarily playing the game in Ironman or Hardcore Ironman worlds, which not only introduces sandbox MMORPG gaming but applies some major restrictions to the base game experience like being unable to trade items with others.
Evidently this migration – or more likely a temporary vacation to the game powered by chasing the dragon of Twitch’s engagement algorithm – has resulted in many of these streamers being taken by surprise at OSRS’ mechanics. “I always found professions in WoW limiting, and OSRS doesn’t hold back, you can level up everything,” AnnieFuschia is quoted as saying. “There isn’t FOMO and your progress matters and is valuable.” Yes, there really is a big wide MMORPG genre beyond WoW’s walls!
Whether this is translating into a surge of new players for Jagex isn’t immediately clear, as the displayed number of players in-game on the OSRS website doesn’t appear to be anything remarkable at the time of this writing. If nothing else, regular fans of the MMORPG appear to be embracing the sudden spotlight across their game, however brief it may be. Also everything old is new again, apparently. Or time is a flat circle; there are a few reads to this whole thing.
