While Boromir might once have famously stated that no one simply walks into Mordor, he did not factor into the tenacity and silly recklessness of Lord of the Rings Online players. Ever since the Mordor expansion opened in 2017, there have been many attempts — some successful, some not — to walk the entire breadth of Middle-earth and end up in Sauron’s backyard.
One of the most recent attempts to do this drew a lot of attention, as the third Great Hobbit Run finally gathered a gaggle of brand-new halflings and took them from the Shire to Mordor in one lengthy parade. As PC Gamer notes, the first two attempts (in 2023 and 2024) fell apart well before Mordor, but this year a six-hour run finally culminated in more than 40 low-level Hobbits piling through the Black Gates and ultimately checking out somewhere inside of Mount Doom.
The organizer of the event, Twitch streamer BurkeBlack, wrote, “This is great. Three years in the running, here we are before Mount Doom. This is a nice juicy bit of lava. Just throw in the ring and there’s gonna be more than enough, and Sauron can kiss my butt!”
And yes, they’re going to host this run again in 2026.
