New World will be ‘free’ for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subbers starting July 15

The New World news just keeps coming this week: First, we get a hell of a preview of the next two seasons (minus new season servers, which are dead and not coming back), and now we’re getting news that Amazon is bringing New World to the PlayStation Plus lineup.

“PlayStation and Amazon Games announced that New World: Aeternum will be available on PlayStation Plus starting next week on July 15,” says the team.

Readers will of course remember that New World launched its Aeternum version on Xbox and PlayStation last autumn, and the game already has no subscription, but PS5 players needed to pay for the basic PlayStation Plus to access the game’s online features (which is to say, all of them because this is indeed still an MMORPG). There was also a trial that allowed people to sample the game without paying, though not permanently. This new deal will apparently allow PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium players to jump in without paying the box price at all, saving them a cool $60.

For those keeping track of PlayStation’s tiered sub mess, Essential (the one that unlocks multiplayer) is $10 a month, Extra is $15 a month, and Premium is $18 a month.

We have an email out to PR to confirm additional precise details and will update when we get more information, but the tl;dr is that before PS5 players needed to pay $60 and $10 a month to access New World; soon they just have to pay $15 a month.

New World players on Reddit are in a mixed mood over the decision; obviously, it’s annoying to people who just paid $60 for the title, and some people seem to believe it’s a sign of the game’s struggles that Amazon is going the soft-F2P route. But still others argue that $60 was a big ask and that more players for the game can only be a net positive for the playerbase.
