When we were looking over this game announcement and its excitement over “Zeny buys it all,” we were immediately suspicious that this was yet another blockchain morass in the making. But no, that doesn’t appear to be the case with Ragnarok M: Classic; this is a global release of a previously Asia-only mobile version of the game that leans in on a “relaxed, player-friendly design” with a single currency for all in-game items.
“Unlike other mobile RPGs, Ragnarok M: Classic Global introduces a revolutionary, Zeny-only economy. There are no paid gachas, no exclusive top-up items, and no hidden monetization traps. Every item in the game—from powerful gear to rare MVP cards—can be obtained through gameplay and traded freely with other players. This system ensures a fair and transparent experience where progression is driven by skill, effort, and adventure—not spending.”
While developer XD.com and publisher Gravity Interactive continue to talk up how items and Zeny are earnable in-game, we hasten to point out that Zeny can totally be purchased for cash money, so this isn’t actually revolutionary at all as it’s a model that exists throughout the MMORPG industry, but OK, it’s still better than most of the alternatives. And if you were suspicious, it could be because Gravity has tried to put the Ragnarok franchise through the mobile NFT speedrun in the past, though this isn’t the same game.
Anyway, the game is lauding other features like 100% guaranteed gear enhancement success, six core classes that can be swapped back and forth, and the promise of “less grind, no pressure” like its offline grinding functionality. Pre-registration for the global version of the game is available on both the App Store and Google Play if there aren’t any yellow flags flying over this one.
