Back in June, we started getting pretty worried about Nightingale, whose developers hadn’t really surfaced over the course of the couple of months since the game’s big April patch. When Inflexion finally did resume comms, it made clear that it would be working on dedicated servers, allowing players to host their own servers privately. In fact, those servers have been in testing already this summer.
But this week, the studio makes clear that this new tech isn’t just an addition to the game; it’s kind of a replacement for the last vestiges of MMO in the game. Inflexion’s Aaryn Flynn explains that the team’s analytics suggest the company should retire its always-online infrastructure – in other words, Inflexion won’t be hosting its own Nightingale servers anymore.
“Really what we’re doing is moving from a server hosted or realm-centric model to a player-centric one,” Flynn says.
Characters on those official servers will be able to migrate to any other private servers they wish, so no one will be losing characters because of this move, and it also sounds as if you’ll have plenty of time to move.
Finally, Flynn candidly points out that this move will indeed save the studio a lot of money at a time when the industry is, you know, kind of a trainwreck.
“You know, when you look at the state of the industry right now and you look at a lot of the bad news stories that are going on – we’ve had our share of those too […] [It’s] just so so important to us that we make the decisions that keep our studio being viable, put[ting] our dollars towards the things that matter the most, which is fund new content updates for the game, long-term viability for our developers. And so this helps us do that too. […] It’s incumbent on all of us to be very judicious with how we spend that money, and obviously we owe you so much as our players, and we want to right by you. And so this is the balance we are trying to strike right now and make sure that works.”
Expect another AMA this week and more blog posts on the exact process for transferring off the official servers.
